Deciding to pursue your nursing career in a new country is an exciting and daunting decision. There’s a lot to think about before moving to Australia, such as living arrangements, finding a job, choosing a region to live in, and applying for a visa.
There is a high demand in Australia for nurses from all specialities (check the Skilled Occupations List for full details). The healthcare system is valued very highly and nurses are considered to be the strong backbone which holds it together.
If you’re a nurse currently working in the UK or Ireland and are thinking of moving to Australia to start a new job or to study nursing, then here are ten pieces of advice we’d offer:
- Ensure that all your necessary qualifications and visa paperwork are in order to ensure a smooth migration experience. Consider finding a migration agent to help you with this.
- Secure a job or a place on a course before moving to Australia, rather than waiting until you get there.
- Begin with a positive attitude. A smile and enthusiastic approach will get your career in nursing off to a flying start.
- Patient care is of the utmost importance. Treat patients with sensitivity and kindness and you’ll find so much fulfilment.
- Don’t let your emotions or personal issues affect your work. If you’re missing home, or having difficulty settling into life in Australia then talk to someone about it. Don’t suffer in silence.
- Know when and where to ask for help. There are plenty of resources for nurses if you need advice or support in your studies or job, such as the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation.
- Always work hard and take pride in your position. Patients will look to you for support and help, so try your best in everything you do.
- But don’t overwork yourself. Skipping meal breaks or working extra long shifts won’t make you a better nurse and will lower your ability to perform to the highest standard.
- Teamwork is key. Supporting your colleagues or fellow nurses will create a pleasant work environment and you will make some wonderful friends who can act as a support network in your transition to working and living in Australia.
- Believe you can do it and recognise that you’re a great nurse. You are making an extraordinary life decision and should be proud.
