If you’re a nurse on a working holiday in Australia then you’ll be wanting to combine your work schedule with some travelling. If you’re planning on nursing in Melbourne during your working holiday then you’ll be pleased to know there’s a loads to do and see beyond the neon lights of the city. If you’ve realised that nursing in Australia will actually give you the time for a life outside of work – especially through agency work, then make sure you spend your time off wisely be exploring the glorious sites of Victoria.
Melbourne has an enviable location, just down the road from some of Victoria’s premier attractions. All within 2 hours drive of the CBD, the following attractions make for a splendid break from the hustle and bustle of town.
The top of many a list are the stunning 12 Apostles. Technically speaking there are only 8 left (there were only ever 9 to be being with, weirdly) these stunning, and huge, limestone stacks located just off the Great Ocean Road are a sight to behold. Rising eerily up from the waves, they stand strong against the brutal Southern Ocean and it’s easy to see why they’re so popular. Just under a 2-hour drive from Melbourne, the 12 Apostles form part of the Port Campbell National Park, which stretches for miles along this spectacular coastline, playing host to craggy cliffs and arches, as well as a variety of birdlife, including Fairy Penguins. The area is well and truly on the tourist map so make for an early start to beat the crowds.
If it’s wildlife you’re after, you can’t go far wrong with Philip Island, an easy drive or short ferry ride from the city. This rugged island is a dream destination for all ages, with sheltered beaches, fine eateries and a multitude of activities. Take a wander along the beautiful headland at The Nobbies, and get an excellent view of Australia’s largest fur seal colony on the appropriately named, Seal Rocks. Far enough away to avoid the pong! The ultimate wildlife experience here though is the sight of hundreds of penguins returning from a day’s fishing at sundown to the dunes along the island. Penguin Parade at Summerland Beach is well set up with boardwalks, guides and interactive displays. This is by far the most popular attraction, and for good reason. Those guys are seriously cute.
You’re probably aware that Australia is famous for its wine, so nurses can certainly reward yourself away from the ward! Revel in Victoria’s premier wine producing region in the Yarra Valley. Enjoy a full day of cruising through beautiful rolling countryside, stopping off at the myriad wineries to learn about the wine making process and enjoy tastings as you go.
You can hire a car and easily do this trip yourself, but if you’re planning on taking full advantage of the many wines on offer, it might be more sensible to join one of the many guided tours to the region, leaving the driving to someone else so you can relax and enjoy the excellent wines to your heart’s content.
